3rd May 2010 KO cup Semi-final Ashton Athletic 4 - 2 Leigh Genesis White
On a rainy evening both teams showed no signs of any semi-final nerves. Ashton settled the quickest and Jamie rattled home a free kick on the 2min mark. Leigh applied the pressure and came close to a early equaliser. It would be Ashton that would extend their lead when Jake got on the end of a Faisal corner to slot it past the keeper after a goal mouth scramble on the 5th min. Leigh started to settle and looked like the Leigh team we all know, passing and moving and got a quick reply on the 6th minute when their number 9 got on the end of a superb through ball to beat Jimbo. We now have a 15min spell of end to end football with both teams passing quickly and it always looked like Leigh would get the equaliser and they did just that on the 21st min when their number 8 raced past the defence to make it 2-2. Ashton battling hard and Leigh pressing forward, it was going to take something spectacular to break the deadlock and up stepped Callum on the 27th min with a surge up field from left back unleashed a savage shot to beat the keeper to the top corner,3-2ht. Leigh came out the second half with a lot more venom and toom the game to Asthon, but Ashton took the challenge and everyman battled hard to break Leigh down. Ashton started to push forward and on the 37min Jamie set off down the right and cut inside to hit a rocket of a shot past the keepr to take the game to 4-2. What followed would be some of the best football played by both teams, a typical semi-final with midfield battles and steadfast defence and strikers trying to improve their own personal tallies.4-2ft
Well done to both teams you were both superb and the standard of football would not look out of place at any premiership club
