22nd March 2009 Standish Panthers 1 - 0 Ashton Athletic
A fast paced game against a physical team and the wind playing its part to, Ashton set off the slower of the two put were soon up with the pace and created some good chances. The ball was going end to end and Standish having their share of the ball used the wind to their advantage with the long ball. Ashton tried to play their normal passing game but against a physical team and some things being missed or ignored by the referee seemed to knock Ashton off their game. Ashton chances came and went with a total of nine on target. After a team talk from Hayden and Mike, Ashton came out and dominated the second half and again Standish relied on the long ball but Ashton coped better with it in this half. Ashton applied the pressure and a excellent shot from Sam but could not beat goalie who managed to get his left hand to it for a super save. Lewis Birch who walked off with the man of the match trophy stood strong all game and gave very little away The positives from the game is that Ashton played the better football and were the better team. Well done to all the lads for the effort they put in and for not letting some of things that were going on, that were being ignored by the referee, upset them to much.
