Knock out cup semi-final 2009 30th April 2009 Downall Green 0 - 3 Ashton Athletic
Another excellent display saw Ashton Athletic cruise into the final at the expense of Downall Green. Without reaching the heights we all know they are capable of they still had too much for their opponents; With build up play from the back channelled down the right and centre clear cut chances were few and far between in the opening exchanges. Despite this it took two first class saves to keep Downall Green on level terms until mid-way through the first half, when Jason Knight scored a hotly disputed opener which firstly many thought was a foot up and then a subsequent hand ball. Ashton Athletic continued to dominate play however their second goal came from a set piece, when Callum Stirrup from a corner noticed Jason in acres of space on the edge of the box and his superb through ball was turned home by Kieran Touhey. The second half saw the introduction of Sam Smith and Joe Yates, with Lewis Birch moving to the left midfield. Downall Green came in to the game in the second as they were told to push up but still they troubled Ashton Athletics back line. Ashton Athletic continued to pass the ball around well and was unlucky not to increase their lead on several occasions. With 5 minutes or so left Ashton Athletic reintroduced Callum and Jason to the game and the former put the game beyond doubt when he fastened onto a long clearance from Ben and tucked the ball home. Lewis birch quite rightly took the man of the match with a superb all round all round display, especially when playing out of position on the left.
The final beckons and Ashton Athletic are once again on course to achieve a memorable double in their first season on grass
