8th March 2009 Ashton Athletic 3 - 0 Highfield Grange Hotpsur
 

Once again Ashton showed they are the team inform when they ran out 3 – 0 winners against a very resolute Highfield grange Hotspur.  Without reaching the dizzy heights they are capable of, they still proved too strong for their opponents.  With a biting gale force wind in their favour they still had only a one goal lead at the interval.  Despite several guilt edge chances they only one converted had the hallmark of Ashton written all over it.  A superb four man move started by Callum deep in his own half and carried on by Lewis and Joe saw Jason “Torres” excellent finish. With the wind at their backs in the 2nd half it was inevitable Highfield would come more in to the game.  Although, despite a lot of possession they posed little threat to the Ashton defence, which was superbly marshalled by Man of the match Kieran who still found time to get forward.  Whilst the ever dependable James as always hardly missed a tackle.  Ben when called upon produced excellent saves to keep the lead intact.  Midway through the second half Ashton sealed their victory, if their first goal was vintage Ashton the second and third goals where superb solo efforts by “Rocky” Reagan and “Sniffer” Sam.  Regan capped a brilliant debut with a strong run from near the halfway line with a beautiful chip over the keeper as he went to ground.  This was equalled by another run from Sam which culminated in him beating the last defender and another excellent finish ensued.  Ashton continued to control the game until the final whistle and look more than capable of keeping or improving on their 3 point lead in what is a very competitive and high standard league
