Under 10's
7th April 2009 Ashton Athletic 5 - 0 Highfield Grange Athletic
Ashton Athletic found out having earned the right to appear in the semi-final on the pitch, cruelly had it wrenched from their grasp. despite this, showing a maturity way beyond their tender years that some of their seniors would do well to copy, they still went out and consolidated their slender lead at the top with an emphatic 5-0 win. Ashton took an early lead when man of the match Callum "messi" Stirrup scored another goal of the season contender. Picking a ball up in his own half he beat two players as he drifted inside and rifled a superb left foot drive in to the roof of the net from midway in the Highfield half. Soon after Ashton doubled their lead when a top quality move involving a interchange of passes beween Joe Yates and Lewis Birch led to the latter crossing for Jason "torres" Knight to convert from close range and maintain his goal scoring spree. Such was Ashton's dominance; it was no surprise when they went three up near the end of the first half. Once more if Callum's is a goal of the season contender then Kieran "englands No 2" Touhey finished what must rank as one of the moves of the season, and there have been many. He started and finished a classic series of one, two touches at speed that went nearly the length of the pitch, involving the whole of Ashton's centre and right flank and was on hand to apply a deserved unstoppable finish. Ashton started as they finished the first. With the newly introduced Regan "rocky" Osborne running the channels and tireless work load completely unsettling the Highfield defence it was no surprise when ace goal poacher Sam "sniffer" Smith added two more to complete the scoring, the latter being an excellent lob from a through ball. As hard as Highfield tried Ashton made certain they kept a clean sheet with Kieran and James Grady making sure as little as possible got through and when it did Ben Ascroft showing why he is the best around. The engine room of Lewis, Joe and callum as to why they are without equal. With Sam, Jason and Regan playing to their full potential there is a belief that despite their cup heartache, league honours in Ashton's first season on grass are still very much on the cards. The next game up against leigh Genesis who is still very much in the frame is the one that is likely to decide this years league championship destination. Given what they have suffered at the hands of officialdom no one would deserve it more with honours decided, as they should be on the pitch
