22nd March 2009 Highfield Grange Hotspur 0 - 2 Ashton Athletic

Ashton put the demons of last week behind them and started the game in a determined mood. With excellent build up play from the back line and a excellent one, two passing moved down the right between Lewis and Joe saw Joe put a ball through to the feet of Jason and he slotted home the opener on the 3rd minute.  Highfield had their chances but for a superb double save from England’s number one, Ben Ashcroft kept Highfield frustrated at their missed

opportunity.  Ashton’s excellent defence and good positional play from Man of the match James Grady resulted in Highfield only having two attempts on goal in the first half.  Ashton started the second half determined to get another goal and terrorised the Highfield defence with better passing and switching play through the mid-field kept Highfield on the back foot. Ashton were always in control of the game and came close to a second goal on numerous occasions but after a slick pass to Lewis from Callum saw Lewis send a long ball to Jason who took it in his stride and knocked it passed the goalie on the 33rd minute.  Highfield battled to the end but again excellent defending from Ashton saw Highfield having more chances off target than on.  Ashton’s dominance was shown when they had twice as many shots on target than their opponents.  I’ve got to mention the football that was on display is a credit to the team to be able to spread and pass the ball on a pitch that has a slope steeper than rag brew leaves you wondering what are they capable of on a good firm pitch
