19th April 2009 Ashton Athletic 2 - 0 Downall Green

 

With the league title in their grasp Ashton set about determined to win the league with one game left.  A very strong Downall Green team made sure that Ashton would have to work hard if they were going the be crowned champions.  Ashton a little nervous at first and Downall Green being strong at the back would make this a exciting game to watch.  Ashton soon settled down and set about their normal passing game and started to get behind the Downall Green defence.  Excellent one. two passing moves down either flank kept turning Downall Green around, but always managed to scramble back to block the Ashton attack.  It was from a short one,two corner and Callum crossing in for Regan to open the score with a nice header.  Regan showing his delight with what must be the biggest smile in the Wigan league. Downall Green tried to pass it about and with a bit more composure could have had more chances than they did.  Downall Greens number 9 always held the ball up well but the support could not match his strength and good footwork.  Ashton as a team worked well for each other with Ben being the voice behind the team and always shouting encouragement and Joe being the engine in centre mid.  With good build up play from the back two, James and Keiran with the latter walking off with the man of the match trophy,  Ashton set off on another quick passing attack, down the right flank Callum spotting the gap made a run from the left to get in the box and on the end of a brilliant cross from Jason.  In the second half Ashton's enthusiasm was increased when Sam came off the bench to work hard and create space for his team mates and had a couple of chances himself.  Downall Green never stopped working and their performance would have beaten any other team but had met Ashton in determined mood.  Overall it was a exciting game, Downall Green are a big unit and play to their strengths, Ashton played to their strengths of passing and moving
