13th September 2009 U11's 2 - 3 Leigh Genesis Blues
On a bright sunny Sunday morning saw an epic match between two evenly match teams. Both teams with quick passing and movement set about breaking one another down. It was Ashton that got the early advantage after a chip over the top from James landed at Faisal feet who turned and slotted it past the goal keeper. Leigh not to be outdone and always seemed to beat Ashton to the 50-50 balls mounted their own attack that led to a goal line scramble in the Ashton goal mouth before the ball was finally cleared. Ashton tried to mount an attack but always got beat to the ball by a very enthusiastic Leigh outfit that again created another goal mouth scramble. As the game went on it was evident that Ashton could not get in to their normal flowing game and after another Leigh attack saw the ball being deflected in to the Ashton goal. The first half finished 1-1. The start of the second half saw some changes to Ashton's format, James replaced Lewis in goal, Callum slotted in at left back, Jamie pushed out to right midfield and Matty Hiley replacing Jake and taking up the centre half position. It was Leigh that dominated the early half and set about improving on the one goal they had already scored. Faisal and Regan having a midfield battle with a determined Leigh outfit could not get the ball and the passing flowing. It was Leigh that would increase their lead after a break down their right saw the cross being slotted in on the second attempt after a superb save from James. Ashton from the restart tried to run the ball instead of their normal calm quick passing failed to get the equalizer and it was Leigh again that broke down their right side for the cross to be slotted home again. The score now 3-1 and Ashton decided to play with a bit more controlled urgency and after a well worked corner between Faisal and Matty Hurst saw Lewis slotting it home to make it 2-3. Ashton seemed to have the urgency that they lacked all game and started to look dominant but with time not on their side could not get the equalizer. Hopefully lessons have been learned and sometimes you have to battle and grind the win out if things are going against you. Leigh played with a lot more urgency and seemed to what the win more than Ashton. Well done to both teams for an epic match.
